Michael Enriquez, The PackerPioneer Jews and Contemporary Western and Historic Art
Through October 29.
Mixing the history of the Jews in Santa Barbara with prominent early western artists like O.E. Berninghaus, Edward Borein, Jose Cisneros, Alexander Harmer, and Channing Peake and with contemporary western and cowboy (and cowgirl) artists like Michael Enriquez, Nance Hodge, Joe Milazzo, Joel Phillips, Jeff Sojka and Jim Stuckenberg makes this exhibition unique on the art scene. The famous Peter Treadwell Fiesta photograph and the series of flamenco dancers by Charles Minsky only increases the excitement. Introduce the speculative theory that explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo might have been a Sephardic Jew from Spain, and the exhibition is as fun and explosive a way to kick off Fiesta as cascarones on the head!
