WE CONDEMN THE RECENT VIOLENT ATTACKS IN ISRAEL

In concert with the Jewish Federations of North America and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara unequivocally condemns two horrific acts of violence in Israel: stabbing of six at the Jerusalem Pride Parade and deadly arson attack in the West Bank that killed 18-month-old Ali Saad Daobasa and wounded three of his family members.

Prime Minister Netanyahu called the arson a “terrorist attack” and expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas in a phone call. Israeli police arrested Yishai Schlissel for the pride parade attack, which the prime minister called a “despicable hate crime.”  Schlissel was convicted and served ten years for stabbing and wounding three people at the 2005 pride parade.

We are shaken and saddened by these violent events.  There is no place for hate or violence in the Jewish state. These attacks rip at the fabric of Israeli society, our shared celebration of pluralism and diversity, and core Jewish values.  We are confident that the Israeli justice system will find and convict the perpetrators of the arson attack and we will call for swift judgment on Schlissel if his alleged recidivism is proved. The recent sentencing of two Israeli youths who set fire to a bilingual Hebrew-Arabic school in Jerusalem and covered it with hate graffiti in November 2014, and Wednesday’s indictment of two men, Yinon Reuveni and Yehuda Asraf, for the arson attack on the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes at Tabgha, on the Sea of Galilee, five weeks ago, underscore our faith in the democratic institutions that uphold Israel’s laws and societal norms. But these intolerable attacks must be brought to an end.

Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara Statement on Iran

As part of the Jewish Federations of North America, Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara (JFGSB) has forged one of the top ten philanthropic networks on the continent, helping to rescue millions of Jewish refugees across the globe, build the State of Israel and aid Jewish and non-Jewish vulnerable communities around the world.

That is why we join with other Federations in making our voice heard regarding the agreement with Iran.

We are hopeful that diplomatic efforts will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and we appreciate the hard work President Obama, Secretary of State Kerry and Under Secretary Sherman have put into crafting this agreement.

At the same time, we are concerned. Iran’s support for Hezbollah and Hamas, its human rights violations and its aggressive threats toward neighboring countries – including Israel – make the specter of a nuclear-armed Iran untenable.

President Obama and his administration have repeatedly said that any deal with Iran must shut down Iran’s uranium enrichment path to a weapon, cut off all four of Iran’s potential pathways to a bomb, and track Iran’s nuclear activities with unprecedented transparency and robust inspections throughout its nuclear supply chain. We agree. We urge Congress to give this accord its utmost scrutiny.
